Tommy: Let’s think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted: Go on, I’m listening.
Tommy: Here’s the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box ’cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: ‘Course it does. Why shouldn’t it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
Ted: What’s your point?
What a wonderful question, Ted!! As so pleasantly illustrated in this excerpt from the movie, “Tommy Boy,” a guarantee can be a wonderful thing. It can leave you feeling pleased with a purchase that you’ve made or a service that was provided to you. But, what happens when we forget the old adage that a guarantee is only as good as the person that stands behind it.
I recently met with a customer that had used the services of a well-known national windshield repair company. Last summer, she had a 3-4 inch crack in her windshield. With glass coverage on her vehicle, she contacted her insurance company to have work performed on her windshield to repair the damage. Her insurance company graciously invited her to contact this national glass repair company that was part of their “network” to have the damage fixed. Everything went well, the damage was fixed quickly and the customer was satisfied. Only a few short months later, the damage continued to spread. Come to find out, the service “guarantee” was not honored because according to the insurance (who is also refusing to pay for the additional damage or send the company back out to fix the problem), the work is not guaranteed because “anything could have caused that additional damage.”
Which brings us back to the GUARANTEE!! When something is guaranteed, in my language, that means that it will either work and you will be satisfied OR the problem will be addressed and the matter resolved until your satisfaction is achieved. So, when Boise’s Best Windshield Repair, L.L.C. states that their work is GUARANTEED, make sure that you know what the other company is offering when they use that same word.
So often in today’s society (it’s unfortunate, but true) people tend to forget the meaning of a promise, guarantee or simply a person’s word.
